All Aboard to Beijing

We trained from Shanghai to Beijing overnight Tuesday.  We departed from the Shanghai Railway station about 7:45pm and rode all night, arriving in a rainy, moist and humid Beijing right on time at 7:15am.  The twelve of us shared three four-bunk berths on the Beijing bound train, which rocked many of us to sleep Tuesday night.  To some extent, it was like sharing three neighboring dorm rooms.

Is it correct to assume that you traveled to Beijing on a conventional train, and not of the new bullet trains that China introduced this month, according to The Economist? The magazine says the new China Railway High-speed (or CRH) trains have cut the travel time between Beijing and Shanghai to ten hours (down from 12). But, the report also says a lot of Chinese track still needs upgrading, which cuts down on maximum speed. Still, I’d think the Beijing-Shanghai route would be a high priority.

Whether your train was slow or fast, how did it measure up in your opinion, in comparison with our Amtrak?
