In the later 1940s, the music of Aram Khachaturian became very popular in the United States, especially music such as "Sabre Dance" from his wartime ballet "Gayane." Among the first to record this music was the New York Philharmonic, conducted by Efrem Kurtz, who was born in Russia and who was very experienced in presenting ballet music.
