This Week on the Evening Concert: Sep 2 - 6, 2013

This week on the Evening Concert we start with “A Classical Labor Day” from Illinois Public Media, then Till Fellner is the soloist in Beethoven’s 1st Piano Concerto with the CSO; Wednesday it’s Brahms’ 1st Symphony from our new series of San Francisco Symphony broadcasts, followed by Berlioz’ “Symphonie Fantastique”  from our new series of Cleveland Orchestra broadcasts. Friday it’s "Prairie Performances with Roger Cooper".

The 100-Year Shockwave: The “Rite of Spring” (Encore Broadcast)

Tonight at 7:00 on the Evening Concert it’s an encore broadcast of “The 100-year Shockwave – Stravinsky’s ‘Rite of Spring’”. This past May 29th was the 100th anniversary of the first performance of this groundbreaking work. You’ll hear first-hand recollections from composer Stravinsky and conductor Pierre Monteux. Tokyo String Quartet & Lynn Harrell play Schubert’s Quintet in C

Tonight at 7:00 on The Evening Concert cellist Lynn Harrell joins the Tokyo String Quartet in Schubert's famous "Quintet in C for Strings" from Santa Fe.  At 8:00 the Jerusalem String Quartet plays Debussy's String Quartet in G minor at Wolftrap.

Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto on the Evening Concert

Tonight at 7:00 on the Evening Concert it’s the “A.R.D. Music Competition” where rising young stars play with established groups.  Competition winners are the soloists in famous concertos like Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto and Nielsen’s Clarinet Concerto. Also on the program, the youthful Armida String Quartet play one of the Haydn String Quartets.

Pianist Leif Ove Andnes plays Chopin and Liszt in Edinburgh

Tonight at 7:00 on the Evening Concert it’s the last of our four-part series “Edinburgh Festivals: Year of Creative Scotland”.  Pianist Leif Ove Adnsnes is featured in works by Chopin and Liszt.  Les Vent Francais plays Mihaud’s Quintet “The Fireplace of King Rene” and bass-baritone Luca Pisaroni sings Schubert’s “An Die Musik”.

Tonight at 7:00 on The Evening Concert Sir Mark Elder leads the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in a program of Shakespeare-themed works like Elgar’s “Falstaff: A Symphonic Study” and Tchaikovsky’s famous “Romeo and Juliet fantasy Overture”.  . Also on the program, Delius’ “Walk to the Paradise Garden” and Bernstein’s “Symphonic Dances from ‘West Side Story’”.

Tonight at 7:00 on the Evening Concert it’s the “Rheingau Music Festival” from Deutsche Welle Radio.  Paavo Jarvi conducts the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra in Mahler’s “1st Symphony.”  Also on the program, Schumann’s “Piano Concerto in A Minor” with soloist Khatia Buniatishvili and “Clouds” by contemporary German composer Peter Ruzicka.
