The music of Lead Belly and Woody Guthrie is featured in the inaugural episode of this innovative new program featuring music from the sound archives of Smithsonian Folkways Records. You’ll also hear blues from Robert Jr. Lockwood, gospel music and international folk songs.

In place of the regular show on Friday, we’ll bring you a concert by the Chicago Chamber Musicians, playing the Clarinet Quintet by Brahms, the “Dumky” Trio of Dvorak, and one of Schumann’s Fantasy Pieces. I’ll be back on Monday with a guest from the local music community.

As part of WILL-FM’s all-American July 4th, John features some classic performances of Ferde Grofe’s American classic “The Grand Canyon Suite.” You’ll hear old time recordings from Paul Whiteman’s Concert Orchestra, the ensemble for which it was written, as well as a modern performance with the sounds of a real thunderstorm!
