Josefina Lopez, Writer; Playwright; Screewriter; Artist in Residence, University of Illinois

Host: David Inge

Josefina Lopez

Our guest will be playwright and author Josephina Lopez. She is one of America’s best-known Latina writers, most recognized for her play and film “Real Women Have Curves.” She was just 19 when she wrote the play that tells the story of a teenage girl torn between her desire to go to college and the need to provide for her family. We’ll talk about where the impulse to tell stories comes from, her early interest in theater, and about challenging the standard notions of beauty.

Luminarium: A Novel

Alex Shakar, Associate Professor/Program Director, Creative Writing Program, Engnlish Department, University of Illinois

Host: David Inge

Alex Shakar

Where does religious experience come from? Is it the result of some random action of our brains? What if we could reproduce the experience of the divine by artificial means? Would it be any less real? Those are just a few of the questions Alex Shakar explores in his new novel, "Luminarium." We'll talk to him about the book, which revolves around a man named Fred Brounian. In the midst of a crisis, both personal and professional, Brounian volunteers for a study searching for the roots of faith, and it ends up changing his life.
