The Winner

Posted: Saturday, March 01, 2008

The winner of this year's Great Britcom Vote was Are You Being Served? with 60 ballots cast in support by WILL-TV viewers. Next up was To the Manor Born with 38 votes and My Hero with thirty-one. Ronnie Barker's Open All Hours made a solid showing for a newcomer, garnering 29 ballots. Last year's runner-up, Mulberry, turned in a surprising last-place finish with only 20 votes.

Eighty-five viewers called in with pledges of financial support this evening, for a total of $6,986. Thanks to everyone who participated in this year's event, and especially to those who became Friends of WILL!

Could we vote to get rid of a Britcom? “Keeping up appearances” has been running forever, and it’s terrible. We try to switch to some other channel before we even hear the theme song play.

Couldn’t we please get some time off from this terrible “comedy”?

For years, “Keeping Up Appearances” consistently has been the third most-watched series on WILL-TV (behind “Antiques Roadshow” and “As Time Goes By”). I think that it would be premature to drop a series which continues to draw a relatively large viewership. Tastes vary, of course, which is one reason we offer four different Britcoms each Saturday. If “Keeping Up Appearances” isn’t your favorite, I hope that you’ll find something else that you like!

As Time Goes By has managed to overtake my enthusiasm for Keeping Up Appearances.  The characters are much more believable than the forever-wenchy female lead on Keeping; notwithstanding the fact that the actress herself is VERY good.

Hi britcomers,

I completely agree that KUA - Keeping up Appearances is
extremely irritating… but the acting is terrific…. however
the acting and storyline is simply not as well written as that
of -As time goes by- Starring judi dench, moira brooker
geoffrey palmer and lets not forget the lovely Jenny Funnell
who caught my attention.  With characters of Alistair and
the occasional others, As time goes by is wonderful to watch
and seems timeless.  This and Last of the Summer wine.

Keep up the good work Jenny if you ever read this.

Hey now,  I love British Comedy! After watching our local and national news the weekend on WILL sends in a welcoming reprieve. Without As Time Goes Bye and Keeping up Appearances there would be very little on Sat. Nite that brings a calming escape, with old fashion humer. I say keep up the good work WILL!

I am a latecomer to Britcoms.  By far the funniest show is “Are you being served?”  I hope this show runs forever!
