WILL - Live and Local - October 17, 2009
This is a busy weekend for orchestras in our community, both local and visiting. The Illinois Chamber Orchestra, Millikin-Decatur Symphony Orchestra and the touring Chamber Orchestra Kremlin will all perform in our area. We'll chat with two of the conductors, and solo clarinetist Solomon Baer will join us live in the studio on the Friday edition of "Live and Local.
WILL - Live and Local - October 16, 2009
The Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra celebrates its 50th anniversary this season, with special events and some special features in its concerts. On the Thursday edition of "Live and Local," I'll talk with Steve Larsen, conductor of the CU Symphony, and Gilbert Papp, one of the founders of the orchestra, and we'll play some archive recordings.
WILL - Live and Local - October 15, 2009
The University of Illinois Symphony Orchestra and the São Paolo State Symphony both play at the Krannert Center in Urbana this week. On the Wednesday edition of "Live and Local," I'll talk with two members of the UI Symphony and with Kazem Abdullah, conductor of the Brazilian orchestra, whose program features virtuoso percussionist Evelyn Glennie.

On the Tuesday edition of "Live and Local," I'll talk with baroque violinist Zachary Carrettin and Chester Alwes, music director of the Baroque Artists of Champaign-Urbana, holding their annual BACHtoberfest on Sunday. And Lisa Gaye Dixon joins us to discuss the University of Illinois Theatre Department production of Sam Shephard's "Buried Child.
WILL - Live and Local - October 13, 2009
On the Monday edition of "Live and Local," we'll hear an instrument that is rarely thought of as a soloist: the tuba. In fact, two tubas. Mark Moore of the University of Illinois will solo with the UI Symphony on Friday, and Andy Rummel of Illinois State University will give a recital on Tuesday. Both will join us for a chat and to blow some tunes.

Pianist Ian Hobson is recording the complete works of Chopin, with some discs already released. He'll join us on the Friday edition of "Live and Local" to talk about the project, and to tell us about the evening's concert by Sinfonia da Camera in Urbana. He'll be joined by vocalists Yvonne Redman and Ricardo Herrera, who will sing Cole Porter on that concert.

On the Thursday edition of "Live and Local," I'll talk with Deforia Lane, Director of Music Therapy at University Hospitals of Cleveland, who will be speaking at Illinois State University in Normal on Saturday; and John Mosca, trombonist with the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, who will play at the Krannert Center in Urbana Saturday night.

The Baroque'n Consort is a chamber music ensemble in Bloomington with a repertory concentrated in music of the Baroque, but ranging from early music to contemporary original works. They've been playing together for twenty years now, and to celebrate they'll give a concert on Friday-and appear live on the Wednesday edition of "Live and Local.

Sometimes referred to as "Riverdance for the voice," the multi-platinum group Celtic Woman will be taking their "Isle of Hope Tour" to Sangamon Auditorium in Springfield on Thursday evening. On the Tuesday edition of "Live and Local," I'll talk with Alex Sharpe, one of the four lead singers in the band, all the way from Ireland.

Gabriel Solis is professor of musicology and African-American studies at the University of Illinois and author of the award-winning book "Monk's Music: Thelonious Monk and Jazz History in the Making." Prof. Solis will join me on the Monday edition of "Live and Local" to talk about Monk and play some of his music.
