Live and Local
Baritone Nathan Gunn is one of the bright stars of the opera world and on the music faculty at the University of Illinois. He and his wife, pianist Julie Gunn, will open the Allerton Music Barn Festival in Monticello with a Cabaret Night on Thursday. Nathan will be my guest on the Tuesday edition of "Live and Local," sharing stories and some of his own musical inspirations.
On the Monday edition of "Live and Local," I'll have the first of a week's worth of shows highlighting the Allerton Music Barn Festival at Allerton Park in Monticello. Monday's program joins conductor Fred Stoltzfus, violinist Stefan Milenkovich and Pastor Roger Digges, all of whom will participate in an all-Bach concert next Sunday.
The Allerton Music Barn Festival takes place next week at Allerton Park in Monticello, with jazz, classical music and more. University of Illinois School of Music director Karl Kramer will join us for the Friday edition of "Live and Local" to provide an overview. And Champaign-Urbana Symphony music director Steven Larsen will preview the orchestra's 51st season.
My guest on the Thursday edition of "Live and Local" will be Sam Reese, emeritus professor of music education at the University of Illinois. In addition to his teaching interests, Sam is highly knowledgeable about jazz and its history, and he'll share some of that knowledge with us, focusing on jazz in Chicago.
Guitarist Shawn Purcell was already a seasoned veteran when he entered the doctoral program in jazz studies at the University of Illinois. On Wednesday night, the Shawn Purcell Group will play at the Iron Post in downtown Urbana, and they'll join us live in our studio on the Wednesday edition of "Live and Local." We'll also hear about an Irish music festival called Erin Feis, happening in Peoria this weekend.
On the Monday edition of "Live and Local," we'll hear highlights from three shows heard earlier this year, with live performances by a local old-time band called The Ruthless Goats, and two guests from elsewhere: the uilleann piper and pipe maker Tim Britton and the wonderful violinist Rachel Barton Pine.
On the Friday edition of "Live and Local," we'll hear highlights from three shows heard earlier this year, with live performances by an early-music group called Vox Chambana and by a tango quintet called Tango Espejo, plus an interview with Illinois folk singer Bucky Halker.
Thursday on "Live and Local," guest host Roger Cooper talks to a guest about the production of "Annie" at the Muni in Springfield, and visits with Bob Pearse about Music at the Landing at Kickapoo State Park. Bob plays in the group Strings Attached. Randy McCabe of High Cross Road Band will also be along. He plays at Kickapoo on Friday.
Sitting in with guest host Roger Cooper is trumpeter Jeff Helgeson, who is playing Friday at the Iron Post in Urbana, and Megan Wolf, director of resource development for 40 North 88 West. She'll tell us about the 6th Annual ACES awards.
On the Tuesday edition of "Live and Local," guest host Roger Cooper talks to singer-songwriter Michael Kammin, playing at Krannert Uncorked in Urbana on Thursday. During the second half, he talks to organist Stephen Buzard. He is a recent graduate of Westminster Choir College and is headed to Wells Cathedral as their organ scholar.
