On the Monday edition of the show, I'll share two of my favorite segments from past shows, including a performance of holiday music by the Millikin University Faculty Jazz Sextet live in our studio, and a conversation with bandleader Juan De Marcos of the Afro-Cuban All-Stars.
The Friday edition of the show will be a special two-hour broadcast of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, adapted for the stage and for radio by Bah Humbug Productions and Parkland College Theatre. Surrounding its two acts, I'll chat with the project's creators and producers.
Winter Voices: An A Cappella Holiday" was produced earlier this month for our companion station WILL-TV and featured barbershop quartets, Sweet Adelines choruses and college groups. On the Thursday edition of "Live and Local," we'll hear all the live music from that program, plus an interview with WILL-TV program director David Thiel.
The Chorale of Champaign will give its 20th New Year's Eve show at the Virginia Theater, an evening of music by George Gershwin, Hoagy Carmichael, Irving Berlin, Marvin Hamlisch and many others who wrote memorable tunes from the 30's, 40's and 50's. Music Director Julie Beyler will join me, with a couple of special guests, on the Wednesday edition of "Live and Local.
Keith Harden was a longtime fixture on the Champaign-Urbana music scene, playing a mix of vintage blues, folksy material, classic covers and originals. Keith has trekked back to C-U from Nashville for his annual KEITHMAS show with various musical friends Thursday night, and he'll join us live in the studio on the Tuesday edition of "Live and Local.
The Decatur-based Tympanic Blues Band got its start earlier this year and has already developed a seasoned sound. They'll be playing the Post-Christmas Blues Party at the Celebrity Nites Lounge in Decatur on December 26, and their front man Noah Williams will join me on today's edition of "Live and Local.
Maro Kawabata is a Japanese-born bluegrass guitarist and singer who got his start in this music at the age of 12. He will join banjo player Greg Cahill of The Special Consensus bluegrass band and other special guests for a show in Urbana Saturday night, and he'll be my guest on the Thursday edition of "Live and Local.
The Baroque Artists of Champaign-Urbana will give their annual Christmas concert Sunday, featuring choral-orchestral works by Bach and Antonio Caldara. I'll welcome music director Chester Alwes to the Wednesday edition of the show, as well as young singer-songwriter Pamela Machala, who will play at the Canopy Club in Urbana Thursday night.
This Saturday, the Millikin University Faculty Jazz Sextet will give its "Holiday Jazz" program in Decatur. On the Tuesday edition of the show, I'll talk with trumpet player Randy Reyman, with highlights from last year's concert. And we'll learn about a new Christmas cantata, with text and tune by Martin Luther and settings by J. S. Bach.
