Hathaways are a Champaign-Urbana band led by siblings Kate and James Hathaway who are distinct from other indie-pop bands partly through the influence of Andean folk music. The pair have played in festivals in Peru, and they'll do a show of Peruvian music at the Iron Post in Urbana Sunday night, with Kate's mentor, Tom Turino. Hathaways and Tom will play for us live on the Thursday edition of Live and Local.
Patrick Ball is considered one of the premier Celtic harpers and spoken word artists in the world today. "Heart-stoppingly gorgeous" is how one reviewer described his music. Patrick will make a return appearance at Heartland Gallery in Urbana Wednesday night, and on Live and Local Wednesday at noon this time playing his beautiful brass-strung harp live in the studio. I think this is a show you won't want to miss.
Kevin Lucas is a nationally known percussionist and marimbist who got his start in drum and bugle corps and now fronts his own band called the Kevin Lucas Orchestra. They call their music "world adult contemporary rock," and they've garnered various awards, including a songwriting nod from Billboard in 2011. The Kevin Lucas Orchestra will play the Illinois State Fair in Springfield on Saturday, and Kevin and his 5-octave marimba will join us live on the Tuesday edition of Live and Local.
The Curses are a Champaign-based band who describe their sound as"1920s-style jazz, swing, folk and country but with a new light shone upon it or, kinda like going to your favorite buffet Sunday afternoon with a bad hangover." I don't know that means either, but we can all find out on the Monday edition of Live and Local, when they'll preview their upcoming show at the Iron Post in Urbana.
