The Millikin University School of Music has produced Marc-Antoine Charpentier's baroque comedy-opera The Imaginary Invalid, which continues Friday night in Decatur. I'll talk with music director Daniel Carberg on the Friday edition of Live and Local. And we'll hear from Kayla Johnson at Sleepy Creek Vineyards in Fairmount about the Salt Fork River Art Festival, with lots of juried artwork, musical performances and more.

Singer-songwriter William Fitzsimmons

Singer-songwriter William Fitzsimmons, born to blind parents and raised in Pittsburgh, now lives in Jacksonville, Illinois. He started to write songs relative to his former work as a mental health therapist, and they've been heard on several network television shows. Fitzsimmons will play in Bloomington Thursday night and in Springfield October 6, and he'll be my guest on the Thursday edition of Live and Local.

Fiddler Betse Ellis

About a year ago, the Kansas City-based old-time quartet called The Wilders played in our area and made a live appearance on our show. The band is currently on break for 2012, but their fiddler, Betse Ellis, has struck out on her own and will return to Champaign for a solo performance this Saturday, along with a trio of local musicians. I'll talk with Betse Ellis on the Wednesday edition of Live and Local and sample her recent CD.

Trombonist Melvyn Jernigan of the St. Louis Brass Quintet

In their 48 years of existence, the St. Louis Brass Quintet has had but one trombonist, Melvyn Jernigan, while many other trumpeters, hornists and tubists have spent time in the group. The St. Louis Brass Quintet will play in Jacksonville Saturday night, and I'll talk with Mr. Jernigan on the Friday edition of Live and Local. We'll also hear some recently received recordings by area performers.

This seems to be classical piano week on the show, which we'll continue on the Thursday edition with a conversation with pianist Awadagin Pratt. Born in Pittsburgh, raised in Normal, he now travels the world giving concerts and will return for a recital Saturday night. We'll also hear a live preview of Parkland Theatre's season-opening show, the comedy-drama Steel Magnolias.

Pianist Emanuel Ax

Pianist Emanuel Ax recalls that when he was six years old, he heard a recording of Arthur Rubinstein playing Chopin and decided "that was the greatest thing you could do in life," and he's been doing it virtually ever since. I'll talk with Mr. Ax on the Wednesday edition of Live and Local, in advance of his Urbana recital Thursday night and I'll play some recordings by several local musicians.

Pianist Ian Hobson

Pianist Ian Hobson, on faculty at the University of Illinois, is renowned in these parts for, among other things, performing complete cycles of various composers' piano music. Last season he played all the solo piano works of Robert Schumann, and this season he will embark on the piano solo and chamber works of Johannes Brahms' beginning Wednesday night. Mr. Hobson will join me on the Tuesday edition of Live and Local.

William Butler Yeats expert Prof. William Brooks

The Irish poet William Butler Yeats was preoccupied with establishing the proper declamation of his poems and practiced chanting his works with instrumental accompaniment. On Wednesday, Prof. William Brooks of England's University of York will give a MillerCOMM lecture entitled "Everlasting Voices: Yeats, Chanting and Music." Prof. Brooks and two performer colleagues will join me on the Monday edition of Live and Local.
