The Red Note New Music Festival continues at Illinois State University in Normal through March 7th, with nightly concerts. Thursday’s concert will feature works for band, including a brand new one by Steve Danyew called This World Alive. I’ll talk with Mr. Danyew and with ISU Symphonic Band conductor Daniel Belongia on the Tuesday edition of “Live and Local.” We’ll also hear a short feature on the Yonder Mountain String Band, who return to Urbana Thursday.
The Red Note New Music Festival takes place at Illinois State University in Normal March 3rd through the 7th, with daily concerts workshops and master classes featuring all manner of newer classical music. Tuesday night’s concert will feature several works by celebrated American composer Joan Tower, for solo instruments, chamber ensemble and percussion. I’ll talk with Ms. Tower on the Monday edition of “Live and Local.”
I’m always glad to know about musicians and musical events in some of the smaller towns in our listening area—outside our local “major music centers,” you could say. I recently learned about a loose musical conglomerate called the Gunny Sack Revue, who play a mix of gospel, folk, bluegrass and country every Wednesday night in Arthur. They’ll join me for a live session on the Friday edition of “Live and Local.”
