Live and Local
On the Tuesday edition of "Live and Local," I'll talk with David Commanday, conductor of the Heartland Festival Orchestra, which gives a concert in Peoria on Saturday. And just in time for St. Patrick's Day, the Irish group Danú will perform in Urbana Tuesday night. I'll talk with one of their founders and play some of their tunes.
On the Friday edition of "Live and Local," I'll talk with Randi Collins Hard, director of the current Parkland College Theatre production, "The Father of the Bride," in Champaign through this weekend. And we'll meet Margaret Jones, concertmaster of the Danville Symphony, who solos with the orchestra this Saturday. She'll play her violin a bit for us live.

This weekend the Illinois Symphony Orchestra will play the world premiere of a new work by composer Judith Shatin called "Jefferson, in His Own Words." On the Thursday edition of "Live and Local," I'll talk with Ms. Shatin and with conductor Karen Deal about their collaboration, and we'll hear about the Ballet Folklórico de México, coming to Springfield Friday.
On the Wednesday edition of "Live and Local," I'll talk with Bill Staines, an iconic figure in the folk music world, who will play at the Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center on Saturday. And we'll meet Eckart Runge, cellist of the Berlin-based Artemis Quartet, which is performing at the Krannert Center in Urbana Wednesday night.
The Irish Times calls Slide IE "traditional musicians with attitude," for their diverse collection of songs combining traditional Irish music with contemporary stylings. Slide IE will appear Wednesday night at the Kirkland Fine Arts Center in Decatur, and two of their members will join me for the Tuesday edition of "Live and Local.
Gravitación is the name of a vocal quartet specializing in early music, currently in residence at Millikin University. On Monday, they'll celebrate the release of their second CD with a party and mini-concert in Champaign. We'll have three members of the group in the studio with us on the Monday edition of "Live and Local," to sing and play excerpts from the CD.
Singer, guitarist and accordionist Cynthia Hopkins has been honored for her work as a writer, composer, musician, and creator of unique music/theater projects featuring her band, Gloria Deluxe. The band will perform in the Afterglow at Krannert Center in Urbana twice this weekend, and they'll be my guests on the Friday edition of "Live and Local," performing live in our studio.
The Mark Morris Dance Group is at the Krannert Center in Urbana this week for its 10th consecutive residency, with concerts Friday and Saturday night-as always, featuring live music. Mark Morris himself will be my guest on the Thursday edition of "Live and Local." I'll also talk with Scott Ferguson, conductor of the Collegiate Chorale at Illinois Wesleyan University, about the group's upcoming tour.
On Wednesday, we'll meet three members of the University of Illinois a cappella group The Girls Next Door, in advance of their show at the Canopy Club in Urbana Saturday. And I'll talk with Michael Luxner about the Millikin-Decatur Symphony performance of Mahler's monumental Third Symphony Saturday in Decatur.
On Wednesday evening, violinist Stefan Milenkovich and pianist Rohan De Silva will give a recital at the Krannert Center in Urbana. Last week on "Live and Local," I talked with Mr. Milenkovich, and on the Tuesday edition, we'll hear from Mr. De Silva about the role of the collaborative pianist, with some samples of his work.
