Live and Local
On the Monday edition of "Live and Local," we'll hear a preview performance by this year's Krannert Center Debut Artist, harpist Chen-Yu Huang. Her concert is next Sunday afternoon. We'll also hear some songs from the show The Secret Garden, which opens at Danville Light Opera on April 23.
The Boneyard Arts Festival moves to the University of Illinois campus on Friday, downtown Urbana on Saturday and throughout Champaign County on Sunday. On the Thursday edition of "Live and Local," we'll continue to feature performers from the festival, with Ben Hay playing didjeridoo and Samuel Foster on classical guitar, live in our studio. Both will play in Urbana on Saturday.
The Boneyard Arts Festival gets underway on Thursday and runs through Sunday, with events throughout Champaign County. On the Thursday edition of "Live and Local," we'll hear details from the directors of 40 North 88 West, the county's arts council. And we'll hear the Jewish a cappella group Shircago, who will sing this year's Glaser Memorial Concert of Jewish Music at Sinai Temple in Champaign on Saturday.
On the Wednesday edition of "Live and Local," we'll hear several cast members from the Illini Union Board production of the musical "Guys and Dolls," one of many Mom's Weekend events at the University of Illinois. And we'll meet the acoustic duo Road Song, who are among the artists featured this week in the Boneyard Arts Festival in Champaign County.
On the Tuesday edition of "Live and Local," I'll have part two of our preview of the spring concert of the Center for World Music at the University of Illinois on Friday. We'll feature live performances of drumming from Guinea, a traditional Chinese zither and a musical bow from Brazil. The concert is part of the Boneyard Arts Festival taking place in Champaign County this week.
On the Monday edition of "Live and Local," we'll hear various traditional Chinese instruments, played live in our studio by Priscilla Tse and Yukun Ren. Both are participating in the spring concert of the Center for World Music at the University of University. And I'll talk with violinist Joshua Bell, performing at the Krannert Center in Urbana on Thursday, and sample his latest CD.
Satirical songwriter Roy Zimmerman has been called "a latter-day Tom Lehrer" whose YouTube videos have garnered millions of views and tens of thousands of comments. He'll bring his "Real American" tour to the Independent Media Center in Urbana on Saturday, and he'll play for us live on the Friday edition of "Live and Local." I'll also talk with New York Irish fiddler Tony DeMarco, who plays a local house concert Friday night.

On the Thursday edition of "Live and Local," I'll visit with Denise Gill, who has studied the musical and cultural practices of contemporary Turkey and will illustrate her work with some musical examples. And we'll have with us a member of the Champaign-Urbana Dulcimer Society, which is among the performers at this year's Fairy Tale Ball for the Urbana Free Library.
This Friday night, The Prairie Ensemble will give its last concert of the season in Champaign. On the Wednesday edition of "Live and Local," I'll talk with Desirée Hassler, who will sing Samuel Barber's "Knoxville: Summer of 1915" with the orchestra. We'll also meet the 15-year-old author and director of two one-act plays being performed in Rantoul the next two weekends, and one of the members of the Canadian vocal quintet Chic Gamine, at Sangamon Auditorium in Springfield this Saturday. On the Tuesday edition of "Live and Local," I'll talk with conductor Gary Shaw about the Decatur Youth Symphony Orchestra, which performs at Millikin University Sunday afternoon. And we'll hear scenes from a one-woman show by Karen Vaccaro and Robert Quinlan called "And I Remember: Reflections of Urbana Seniors," with several performances this week.
