Since its beginnings in the 1940s, bluegrass music has grown, matured, and evolved, reaching a wider and wider audience in recent decades. On the Wednesday edition of "Live and Local," we'll visit with the two-person bluegrass and gospel band called Grass Roots Revival, with a live performance in our studio.

Ward Gollings has been booking live entertainment in Champaign-Urbana for about 20 years now. He's currently the booking agent and special events coordinator for Highdive and The Cowboy Monkey in downtown Champaign. Ward will be my guest on the Tuesday edition of "Live and Local," and he'll bring along a few favorite CDs.

Alan Ayckbourn's play Absurd Person Singular is a comedy about three couples in their three kitchens on the Christmas Eves of three successive years. It opens at the Station Theatre in Urbana on July 23, and on the Monday edition of "Live and Local," we'll have members of the Celebration Company in our studio to act out a few scenes.

Illinois Summer Youth Music Program

This Saturday will be the final series of concerts from the Illinois Summer Youth Music program at the University of Illinois, including junior high jazz, chorus, piano and band-and senior high jazz. On Friday's "Live and Local," we'll hear one of the combos from the Senior Jazz Camp, playing live in our studio.

On the Thursday edition of "Live and Local," I'll talk with Joel Aalberts, Director of Cultural Arts for the City of Bloomington, about the incredibly varied offerings at the Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts in the 2009-2010 season. We'll also hear about an Elderhostel choral singing workshop at the University of Illinois, which culminates in a public concert this Friday.

This weekend, the Decatur Civic Center Theatre will host a production by talented high school students of Rodgers & Hammerstein's "Oklahoma!" The students hail from Decatur and neighboring communities, and we'll have two members of the cast on the Wednesday edition of "Live and Local."

This Friday night, Illinois Public Media will co-sponsor a free concert of old-time bluegrass and gospel music by a group called Strings Attached at Kickapoo State Park in Oakwood. The concert is part of the summer music series at Kickapoo, and we'll be pleased to welcome Strings Attached to play live in our studio on the Tuesday edition of "Live and Local."

Baroque Artists of Champaign-Urbana

The Baroque Artists of Champaign-Urbana will perform George Frederick Handel's challenging and exciting "Dixit Dominus" this coming Sunday in Champaign. It will be part of a program that features the BACH Choir, soprano Sherezade Panthaki and some of the instrumentalists who have helped make the group's reputation. Music Director Chester Alwes is my guest on this edition of "Live and Local.

Concert by the Chicago Chamber Musicians

In place of the regular show on Friday, we'll bring you a concert by the Chicago Chamber Musicians, playing the Clarinet Quintet by Brahms, the "Dumky" Trio of Dvorak, and one of Schumann's Fantasy Pieces. I'll be back on Monday with a guest from the local music community.

Rachel Schiff and Nathaniel Seer

The Thursday edition of "Live and Local" will feature two guitarists performing in Champaign this week. Rachel Schiff just finished her undergraduate degree in classical guitar performance and is headed off to Europe to study and compete, and Nathaniel Seer is a singer-songwriter from Indiana who writes "from the dark side."
