We'll take a break from the regular show on Monday to bring you a concert by the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. Oliver Knussen conducts a program of music by Igor Stravinsky and Marc-Anthony Turnage.
On the Friday edition of "Live and Local," we'll hear an in-studio performance by members of the Baroque Artists of Champaign-Urbana, who will play their next concert at Busboom Castle, near Mahomet. Also, we'll talk with Christine Steelman of the Springfield Area Arts Council about the Washington Street Jazz & Blues Festival.
On the Thursday edition of "Live and Local," we'll meet the members of Stringtown Lane, quite an eclectic band playing this week's First Friday event in Monticello. They'll be live in our studio, followed by the director and two of the actors from The Station Theatre's production of the musical "The Full Monty," which opens in Urbana next week.
On the Wednesday edition of "Live and Local," we'll talk with Ann Yeung about her Summer Harp Class at the University of Illinois and its associated concerts, and we'll hear a live performance in our studio by harpist Chen-Yu Huang. Also, we meet Champaign Centennial High School junior Ashley Mondisa, who is headed to New York City for an NAACP-sponsored drama competition.
The Fuchsia Band is, as band members say, "a group of four lads from Cork, Ireland, who play, dance, sing and generally have a good time like it used to be in Ireland." They will play on the Piper's Hut Concert Series in downtown Urbana on Wednesday, and we'll talk with their lead singer, Máirtin de Cógáin, on Tuesday's "Live and Local.
The Decatur-based Sande Hackel Orchestra plays Swing tunes from the 1940s up to the Retro Swing of the 1990s. They will be the main event at a '40s-style dance called "Hangin' at the Hangar"-the New Airport Hangar, that is, on the former Chanute Air Base in Rantoul, next weekend. Sande Hackel joins us on the Monday edition of "Live and Local.
We have quite a mix for you on the Friday edition of Live and Local. First we'll hear from the Millikin Trio, a long-standing classical piano trio based at Millikin University in Decatur. Then it's the Andreas Kapsalis & Goran Ivanovic Guitar Duo from Chicago, playing in Urbana on Saturday. They fuse Serbian and Greek folk music with modern, classical, jazz and beyond.
Don't Ask is a quartet of area musicians playing Klezmer music in the spirit of the roving Eastern European village bands of the 19th and early 20th centuries. They will play a live show at Heartland Gallery in Urbana Sunday evening, and they'll be live in our studio on Thursday.
