Live and Local
The Decatur-based Sande Hackel Orchestra plays Swing tunes from the 1940s up to the Retro Swing of the 1990s. They will be the main event at a '40s-style dance called "Hangin' at the Hangar"-the New Airport Hangar, that is, on the former Chanute Air Base in Rantoul, next weekend. Sande Hackel joins us on the Monday edition of "Live and Local.
We have quite a mix for you on the Friday edition of Live and Local. First we'll hear from the Millikin Trio, a long-standing classical piano trio based at Millikin University in Decatur. Then it's the Andreas Kapsalis & Goran Ivanovic Guitar Duo from Chicago, playing in Urbana on Saturday. They fuse Serbian and Greek folk music with modern, classical, jazz and beyond.
Don't Ask is a quartet of area musicians playing Klezmer music in the spirit of the roving Eastern European village bands of the 19th and early 20th centuries. They will play a live show at Heartland Gallery in Urbana Sunday evening, and they'll be live in our studio on Thursday.
The Community School for the Arts in Urbana will offer a number of summer programs, including a rock camp, an art camp, a banjo class and a classical string orchestra for kids. The School's director, Robin Kearton, will be my guest on the Wednesday edition of "Live and Local." We'll also hear about the Central Illinois English Country Dancers' 14th Annual Playford Ball.
On the Tuesday edition of "Live and Local," we'll have two guests affiliated with area music festivals. Brian Karrick of Rockome Gardens will be here to tell us about the upcoming Family Band Weekend in Arcola. And Chuck Gomez of the Watseka Theatre will preview the Blues, BBQ and Arts Fest, a short drive north of our area.

Monday is a holiday, and we'll take the day off from the regular show to present a recital by the Chicago Chamber Musicians, including Dvorak's Quintet for Piano and Strings.

The group will be playing at the Channing-Murray Foundation in Urbana on Saturday, part of the Piper's Hut Concert Series. And they will be playing live in our studio on Friday.
The American Orff-Schwulwerk Assocation promotes a creative teaching approach that unites music and movement. On the Thursday edition of "Live and Local," we'll talk with Kimberly McCord of Illinois State University and Debby Smith of the Heart of Illinois Orff Chapter about the 2nd Annual Elementary Student Honors Day Festival, happening this weekend in Normal.
The Schwartz Family Band consists of Papa Scott on guitar, sisters Samantha and Kitty on flute and cello, and brother Aaron on violin. The band will appear on the noon-time music series at the Mills Breast Cancer Institute in Urbana on Thursday, and they'll play live at noon on the Wednesday edition of "Live and Local." Also, Chester Alwes, music director of the Baroque Artists of Champaign-Urbana, stops by to talk about the group's concert in Champaign this weekend.
Illinois Summer Youth Music is one of the most highly regarded and well-known musical programs of its kind, serving students from as young as sixth grade to graduating high school seniors. On Tuesday's edition of "Live and Local," we'll talk with David Allen and Joyce Griggs of the University of Illinois about the ISYM program, which this year celebrates its 60th anniversary.
