Illinois Poverty On The Rise: Report

An annual report on Illinois poverty lists Champaign, Coles and Vermilion Counties as having some of the highest poverty rates in the state. Only Jackson and Alexander Counties in southern Illinois had poverty rates higher than those measured in Champaign County in 2011. The numbers come from "Illinois's 33%," which is  the annual report on Illinois Poverty issued by the Chicago-based Heartland Alliance.

Former Members To Serve on Champaign School Board For Interim

Two former school board members have been tapped to fill vacancies on the Champaign Unit Four school board. According to a news release from the district, the school board voted Monday night to appoint Arlene Blank and Phil Van Ness to the seats. They’ll serve until the April elections, and are not running for the seats themselves.

Indiana Senator Looks to Overturn School Standards

A Republican state senator is trying to pull Indiana out of the Common Core State Standards national education initiative, and his bill goes before a legislative committee this week.
