What’s Next For Pensions, Now That Court Has Tossed Illinois’ Law?

It took legislators years of talking about Illinois' pension problem before they did much about it. There was a 2011 law that affects state employees, university professors, and public school teachers hired after that time. Then in 2013 they passed a law that reduced current workers' and retirees' benefits. Nearly immediately, workers and their unions sued, calling the law unconstitutional.

Ex-NIU Fraternity Members Avoid Prison In Hazing Case

Five former Northern Illinois University fraternity members have been sentenced to community service instead of prison, and will pay $1,000 fines in a hazing case involving the 2012 death of a pledge, 19-year-old David Bogenberger. 17 others who faced misdemeanor charges will perform community service and pay fines of $500 each.

High Speed Broadband Service Expanding in C-U

ITV-3 held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to announce the debut of its residential and small buisness broadband service in Champaign-Urbana. Meanwhile, Comcast is also expanding its C-U broadband service.

U of I Gives Retiring President Easter Final Bonus

University of Illinois President Robert Easter will get one last pay increase before he retires later this month.  At their meeting Thursday in Springfield, U of I trustees approved a $167, 200 performance bonus.
