Agriculture Will Return To ‘The Land Of Milk And Uncle Honey”

Alan Guebert has written a syndicated newspaper column about agriculture for about 20 years. Several of those columns have recounted what life was like on the “Southern Illinois dairy farm of his youth” – near St. Louis – and the beloved great uncle who came to “help.” At his daughter’s suggestion, the two of them have gathered those stories into a book, The Land of Milk And Uncle Honey.

Decatur Mayor Mike McElroy Dies At 63

McElroy died just past 8:30 Friday morning after suffering a medical emergency while driving.  He had served as mayor since 2009, and was re-elected in April.  Gov. Bruce Rauner said 'his passion for the community was infectious.'

Champaign Fire Department Celebrates 150 Years

Champaign’s Fire Department plans to celebrate its 150th anniversary this Sunday (July 19) with a parade and fire muster --- defined as a ceremonial assembly of firefighters. Residents will also get a chance to see some of the gear that's transformed the job of a firefighter over the years.

Illinois Issues: The Governor’s Money

In what appears to be a fundamentally new strategy in the use of campaign cash in Illinois, the state’s new Republican governor in May doled out $400,000 in a single day from his main campaign committee, giving to all 67 Republicans in both chambers of the legislature.

Budget Woes Force Layoffs, Furloughs at EIU

Twenty-six annually contracted faculty have already been told they won't be reappointed, while some positions won't be filled.  Some Administration and Professional employees will be required as many as 14 furlough days.

Meister Launches Bid For Recorder

Republican and restaurant owner Rob Meister says he's opted to run for Champaign County Recorder of Deeds rather than Illinois Senate, hoping it will inspire more young people to seek office.
