Future Growth at CIRA Could Come from Current Carriers
Story date: Friday, February 10, 2012 from Illinois Public Radio
Now that Frontier Airlines plans to join Allegiant in providing service to Bloomington’s Central Illinois Regional Airport, officials there are thinking more about the airport’s future.
Frontier this week agreed to begin four weekly flights between Bloomington and Denver starting May 18. Introductory $160 round trip fares are available. Frontier is also announcing the start of service between Denver, Colo. and Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Harrisburg, Pa., Bellingham, Wash., and Great Falls, Mont.
Earlier this year, Allegiant Air also announced it would begin providing flights from Bloomington’s airport to Florida’s Orlando-Sanford International Airport.
Airport director Carl Olson said there is plenty of room for even more growth.
“We are always looking to our current airlines, such as American Airlines and Delta, to see where there are opportunities where they can expand service,” Olson said. “Of course we’re looking at more airlines whether they’re leisure oriented or business oriented. At this point, we have room to grow.”
Olson added that service to Washington, DC is not out of the question.
Bloomington-Normal and other markets are losing service capacity following last year’s decision by Southwest to end service to many AirTran destinations.
