Urbana Mayor Wants Police Training To Remain At UI Campus

A resolution on Monday night's Urbana City Council agenda, suggested by Mayor Laurel Prussing, calls for keeping the Police Training Institute at its current site in Champaign. The measure comes as Decatur philanthropist Howard Buffett has announced plans to build a new training facility in his city. Prussing was among those who worked to save PTI at the university a few years ago.

Illini Women Blow Out Rutgers

The Illinois women's basketball team topped Rutgers 78-41 Saturday at State Farm Center in Champaign, the Illini's second largest ever margin of victory in a Big Ten game. Freshman Petra Holešínská led Illinois with a career-high 21 points.

Slow Start Dooms Illini In Loss At Indiana

The Indiana Hoosiers calmed their fans by sending them into a frenzy. James Blackmon Jr. scored 25 points, Thomas Bryant added 20, and No. 25 Indiana snapped a three-game losing streak with a 96-80 victory over Illinois on Saturday night.

Community Colleges Get Emergency Aid, But Only A Few

The state’s ongoing budget impasse has hit community colleges particularly hard, with funds to these schools and the students who attend them drastically reduced. The Illinois Community College Board is distributing $3 million in emergency aid, divided among seven campuses. Lakeland Community College in Mattoon is on the list.

Southern Illinois University Won’t Become Sanctuary Campus

The president of Southern Illinois University says the school has decided not to become a sanctuary campus for students in the U.S. without legal permission. SIU President Randy Dunn says a review found such a designation could put the school at risk, including possibly losing federal aid.

At Least 5 People Dead In Airport Shooting In Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

At least five people were killed and eight others were injured in a shooting Friday afternoon at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Florida, according to the Broward County Sheriff's Office. The sheriff's office tweeted that "one subject" was in custody and that the injured had been taken to a local hospital. The mayor of Broward County, Barbara Sharief, also told CNN that a suspect had been taken into custody.

RACES Introduces New Executive Director, Vows To Rebuild

RACES, the Urbana-based agency offering help for rape victims in Champaign, Douglas, Ford and Piatt counties, has a new executive director, who vows to restore the services it was forced to cut due to the state budget impasse.
