Champaign Chooses New Fire Chief

by Jeff Bossert

The search process lasted more than a year, but Champaign has its new fire chief.  The city has announced Gary Ludwig will take over as chief on November 17th.

He’s the former deputy fire chief in Memphis, Tennessee, and currently managing director for the Ludwig Group, which does consulting in firefighting and EMS services.

Former Champaign Fire Chief Doug Forsman retired late last year, after 17 years with the department.

"Gary's wealth of experience will be an asset to the Champaign Fire Department," said City Manager Dorothy David, in a press release.  "He is an educator, a proven leader, and a nationally known expert in fire and emergency medical services."

"I am honored and humbled to have been selected by Ms. David," said Ludwig.  "The City of Champaign is a wonderful and vibrant community that my wife and I look forward to being a part of."

Ludwig has 37 years in city and county emergency medical and fire service.  He’ll earn $135-thousand annually.
