Mayors Seek Quinn’s Help In Clinton Landfill Dispute
Central Illinois mayors are urging Gov. Pat Quinn to intervene in a plan to dispose of toxic waste in the Clinton Landfill, just above the Mahomet Aquifer.
The aquifer supplies water to more than half a million people.
The company that owns the Clinton Landfill wants to store PCBs at the site and says a liner would protect the aquifer. The plan needs environmental approval.
The (Bloomington) Pantagraph reports that Normal Mayor Chris Koos was among those who met Quinn Wednesday to discuss fears of contamination.
Koos says that when DeWitt County approved the landfill location in 2002 board members were unaware it could eventually store PCBs.
The mayors want to redo the permitting process, and Koos says he's certain it would not pass now.
Quinn's office says it's reviewing options.
