Mumps Cases Prompt Warnings At 2 Indiana Colleges

Students and employees at two Indiana colleges are being warned about possible exposure to the mumps.

The Vigo County Health Department says a student at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute has a confirmed case of the mumps and at least six others are probably infected with the disease.
 
Health department administrator Joni Wise tells the Tribune-Star that some Indiana State University students attended a Jan. 24 party with the Rose-Hulman student.
 
Officials at both schools say they've sent out notifications about the illness.
 
Wise says most people receive mumps immunization, but the shots don't prevent all cases and there has been a resurgence of cases in the Midwest.
 
Mumps is spread by coughing and sneezing. Common symptoms are fever, headache and swollen glands.
