South Carolina Provost Named UIC’s New Chancellor

The University of Illinois at Chicago has announced a provost at the University of South Carolina will be its next chancellor.

Michael D. Amiridis is executive vice president for academic affairs and  provost at the University of South Carolina in Columbia.

He was named UIC chancellor Thursday pending formal approval from the Board of Trustees members at their Jan. 15 meeting. He would take office March 16.

Amiridis succeeds Paula Allen-Meares who will return to the faculty. He will take over several months after the UIC faculty members voted in favor of a "no confidence'' resolution against Allen-Meares over what they said were changes Allen-Meares made in campus administration without their input.

University of Illinois President Robert Easter cited Amiridis' extensive leadership experience in public higher education.
