Two Arrests Made in Champaign Monday Night Shooting

Champaign Police have arrested two men in connection to a drive-by shooting reported Monday night at 5th and Vine Streets, the fifth such reported incident in the last few days.

Police say several rounds struck a house in the 700 block of North Fifth Street, but no one was hurt. Witnesses reported seeing occupants in a silver colored car roll down a window and fire rounds at a maroon-colored car while driving through the area.

Authorities say a car discovered near an alley in the 400 block of North 3rd street matched the witness descriptions. That led officers to a home in the 300 block of North Third Street, where 19-year old Kyante Weatherall and 19-year old Aaron Kirby were arrested without incident. Police recovered a loaded handgun from the property.

Weatherall was picked up on one charge of Aggravted Dischare of a Firearm, as well as a Champaign County warrant for Aggravated Battery, while Kirby was charged with Obstructing Justice by attempting to conceal evidence. Weatherall was transported to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries sustained prior to police contact.

Police are still seeking suspects who may have been involved in the recent shootings on the city's north side.

Anyone with information is urged to call Champaign Police at 217-351-4545 or Crimestoppers at 217-373-8477 (TIPS).
