U of I Student Headed To Rubik’s Cube Championship

A 25-year-old doctoral student at the University of Illinois is getting ready to head to Las Vegas for the Rubik's Cube World Championship.

The News-Gazette says Ilkyoo Choi began fiddling with the puzzle while he was a high school student in South Korea.

Now his personal record for solving it is just about 12 seconds. He even managed to solve the cube while ziplining in Peru last year.

Choi is working on his PhD in mathematics and says quickly solving the popular toy puzzle involves memorizing different algorithms.

He's co-founder of the school's Rubik's Cube Club and has organized competitions in central Illinois.

He'll represent Korea during the competition in Las Vegas, which begins on Friday.
