University of Illinois Police are investigating an apparent suicide involving a student at the campus’ Krannert Center for the Performing Arts. Officers responded to a report of a fire at Krannert’s outdoor amphitheater just before 3 a.m. Wednesday. Police found a person with severe burns, who was likely deceased, with a gas can next to him.

Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup tells the News-Gazette the deceased was identified as a 21-year old male student from Gurnee.

"The incident remains an active death investigation, but it is believed that this is an isolated event and does not present any ongoing public safety issue," said U of I Police spokeperson Patrick Wade, in a press release.
