Chicago Archdiocese Prepares For Release Of Sex Abuse Files

Officials with the Archdiocese of Chicago say they're releasing about 6,000 pages of documents detailing clergy sex abuse allegations to "bring healing to the victims and their families.''

The comment came from Bishop Francis Kane, who spoke Wednesday during a news conference in downtown Chicago.

The nation's third-largest archdiocese agreed to release complaints, personnel documents and other files for about 30 priests with substantiated abuse allegations as part of settlements with abuse victims.

The documents are being turned over to attorneys Wednesday and will later be released to the public after identifiable information about victims is removed.

Archdiocese attorney John O'Malley says the information will be "upsetting'' and calls the material "painful'' and "difficult to read.''
