The Illinois Supreme Court will hear arguments today in a case on the constitutionality of hospital tax exemptions involving Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.

It was just over a year ago that the 4th District Appellate Court ruled that a 2012 state law allowing hospitals to avoid taxes is unconstitutional.  That law set guidelines for determining the non-profit status of hospitals, based on their level of charity care.

Just after that ruling was issued, Illinois Public Media's Brian Moline spoke to John Colombo, a professor of law at the University of Illinois’ Urbana campus who primarily teaches tax law.  He spoke about the arguments both sides are making in the case and its possible implications.
