Sidewalk Snow Removal Requirements In Champaign, Urbana

Champaign officials say 3.1 inches of snow fell in the city overnight, according to the Illinois State Water Survey, so they’ve put their sidewalk snow removal requirement in effect.

The requirement means that sidewalks in the downtown and Campustown areas must be cleared of snow and ice by 11:30 AM Thursday morning.

Walks that haven’t been cleared by that time could be cleared by the city at the owner’s expense.

Public Works Director Kris Koester said in a news release that property-owners must maintain a path the wide of the sidewalks or 48", whichever is less. If the owner's property is on the corner, the ramps to the cub must also be cleared to maintain a patch from block to block.

Meanwhile, the city of Urbana enacted its sidewalk snow removal ordinance as of 5 p.m. Tuesday.  That means public sidwalks within the downtown, South Philo Road, and University Districts be cleared within 24 hours or those areas could be cleared by the property owner's expense.
