Heirlooms, Artifacts, & Family Treasures: A 2009 Preservation Emporium

Urbana-Champaign—The University of Illinois Preservation Working Group (PWG) hosted the third annual “Heirlooms, Artifacts, & Family Treasures: A Preservation Emporium” at the Spurlock Museum on Saturday, February 21, 2009 from noon to 4pm. About a hundred people attended this free event. Visitors were welcome to bring in small, hand-held items or images of larger items in order to discuss specific preservation questions with specialists. Experts were available in a variety of specialized areas ranging from antiquities to modern digital media. People brought quite a range of items—from silk gowns to surveying equipment to birth certificates, books, and photographs.

IMLS Announces Winners of the Connecting to Collections Grant

Washington, DC—The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) has recently awarded 23 Connecting to Collections: Statewide Planning Grants that will be used to create statewide conservation plans for collections held in libraries, museums, and archives.

Building a Framework for Preservation and Access Decision Making for Audio-Visual Collections

Audio-visual collections are pervasive in libraries, archives, museums, public broadcasting stations and many other organizations ubiquitous to university campuses. "Audio-visual collection” is a broad term and in this context implies recorded sound and moving image collections in both analog and digital formats including: motion picture films, videos, digital video recordings, reel-to-reel tapes, acetate discs, cassette tapes, digital sound recordings, and many other less commonly found formats. These collections present many challenges for those who manage them.
