Public Engagement

The Preservation Working Group has a strong commitment to public engagement-- something that the University of Illinois has been recognized for.

2008 Community Engagement Classification

The U of I has just recently been selected by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching to be included in the 2008 Community Engagement Classification under “Curricular Engagement and Outreach and Partnerships.” According to the Foundation, in order to be selected, “institutions had to provide descriptions and examples of institutionalized practices of community engagement that showed alignment among mission, culture, leadership, resources and practices” in “mutually beneficial and respectful collaboration.” Almost seventy U of I programs were described in the report that was sent to the Foundation during the invitational selection process. The U of I joins 119 other institutions that were named in the 2008 Community Engagement Classification.

University of Illinois Public Engagement Initiative

The PWG is included in the Arts and Culture section of the University of Illinois’ Public Engagement initiative. The PWG gave a poster session entitled “Preservation Rules!” at the inaugural UI Public Engagement Symposium. The symposium, which took place on March 9, 2009, allowed faculty, staff, students, and community partners the chance to share ideas, connect with others, and learn about the public engagement activities that take place on this campus. There were poster/resource table sessions, open information forums, and presentations and panel exchanges based on the following themes: Strategies in Public Engagement; Sustainability: Economic, Social, and Environmental; Dialogs with Communities; Learning through the Ages; and New Ways with Technology.
