Jack Richmond’s Early Memories of Memorial Stadium

Jack Richmond was only 7 years old on Oct. 18, 1924, when the university dedicated Memorial Stadium. He sat in a box seat at field level with his dad, mother and sister.

Although he doesn’t remember everything about that day, he vividly remembers Red Grange running with the ball. Because of Grange’s exploits, it was one of the most famous days in college football history. Grange made quite a memory for Richmond that day, one Richmond still cherishes 84 years later. Richmond also remembers seeing the band play and the lack of landscaping that turned the area surrounding the stadium into a muddy mess.
