At a Unit 4 Board of Education meeting Monday night, the district’s superintendent, Susan Zola, suggested moving the International Prep Academy, a kindergarten through fifth grade bilingual program, to building now housing Garden Hills Elementary, a majority black school in north Champaign with more than 200 open seats.
Residents of Champaign’s Garden Hills neighborhood have to deal with a list of problems, including inordinate levels of poverty, gun violence and vacant houses. The neighborhood on the city’s northwest side has another problem: a lack of infrastructure, like storm sewers and streetlights. The Champaign City Council is taking a first step towards a remedy for Garden Hills. But it could be a long wait to the second step.
The Champaign Unit Four School District has moved a Friday night football game between its two high schools to Saturday morning, after a student was shot to death Tuesday night.
Vic McIntosh, who served from 1998-2009 and 2012 to present, says he's moving to unincorporated Urbana. It's the council's second resignation in recent weeks. McIntosh held off on this announcement earlier this year, after learning that Marci Dodds was resigning her seat in District 4.
Delays in analyzing evidence have prompted Champaign County prosecutors to drop murder charges against Devon Craig in connection with last summer's shooting death of Allen Redding. But those charges could be refiled later.
