Arbitrator Rules In Favor of Fired Champaign Police Officer, With Second Charge Pending

Once again, an arbitrator acting under terms of the Champaign police union contract has ruled in favor of fired police officer Matt Rush, in one of the two charges cited for his 2016 dismissal.

Independent arbitrator Micheal Falvo determined that the Champaign County State’s Attorney’s refusal to use Rush as a courtroom witness was not valid grounds for firing Rush last April --- and that State’s Attorney Julia Rietz overstepped her bounds in doing so. The Illinois Fraternal Order of Police announced the arbitrator’s ruling on Monday.

U Of I Students, Community, Honor Shooting Victim

Many have heard the name George Korchev since the suburban Chicago man died in a weekend shooting in the University of Illinois’ Campustown neighborhood. About 300 from the campus and community have now learned a bit about who he was, while honoring his memory on the Urbana campus quad Tuesday night. Speakers included friend and U of I student Erik Lasaine, who was injured in the shootings early Sunday morning on Green Street.

Five People Shot, One Killed, After Shooting Near U Of I Campus

Authorities say five people were shot, one of them fatally, in two separate overnight shootings within minutes of each other near the University of Illinois Campus. Police say in a news release that they believe the two shootings may be related. The person who died is identified as George Korchev of Mundelein. The other three were taken to a hospital for treatment of what police called non-critical gunshot wounds.
