Singer and multi-instrumentalist Tim Eriksen

Tim Eriksen's "northern roots" Americana sound embraces old New England murder ballads, "shape-note" gospel and haunted originals, alongside Southern Appalachian and Irish songs. The singer and multi-instrumentalist will perform at the Spurlock Museum in Urbana Thursday evening, and he'll be my guest on the Thursday edition of "Live and Local."

Fernandes-Markovic piano duo; Illinois Brass Quintet

This Saturday, an Austrian piano duo will give a lecture-performance at the University of Illinois called "Mahler at the Piano"-referring to Gustav Mahler, the great symphonist, song composer and conductor. On the Wednesday edition of "Live and Local," I'll talk with the Fernandes-Markovic duo. We'll also have a preview of Sunday's Halloween concert by the Illinois Brass Quintet.

The Teflons

The Teflons are three powerful-voiced females and two instrument-wielding guys who blend country, doo-wop, swing, Hawaiian and rare originals. They'll travel from Chicago to Urbana next Saturday to play at the Independent Media Center and give two workshops. Their leader, Barbara Silverman, will be my guest on the Monday edition of "Live and Local."

Springfield Classical Guitar Society

Russel Brazzel is Music Director of the Springfield Classical Guitar Society and teaches at Illinois College and Lincoln Land Community College. He will give a solo recital at Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church in Springfield Saturday night, and he'll play for us live on the Friday edition of "Live and Local." (In the video from his visit, he performs "Hommage à Tàrrega" by Joaquin Turina.)

Violinist Robert McDuffie; Singer-songwriter Darren Hackey

Grammy-nominated violinist Robert McDuffie is in town to play Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" concertos with the Venice Baroque Orchestra, along with a new work by Philip Glass called "The American Four Season." I'll talk with Mr. McDuffie on the Thursday edition of "Live and Local." And we'll hear young singer-songwriter Darren Hackey, live in our studio.

Countertenor Jay Carter is one of our nation's finest singers of that curious voice type. He will perform in recital with lutenist Jeffrey Noonan for the Baroque Artists of Champaign-Urbana on Sunday, and he'll be my guest on the Wednesday edition of "Live and Local." Singer-songwriter Jennifer Knapp

Singer-songwriter Jennifer Knapp was an award-winning Christian pop artist before moving to Australia and taking an 8-year hiatus from music. She has returned to the U.S. and to music, with a new album-and with a new public honesty about her sexuality. Jennifer Knapp will play at the Canopy Club in Urbana Tuesday night, and she'll sing for us live on the Tuesday edition of "Live and Local."

ACE Awards by 40 North 88 West

On Wednesday at the Canopy Club in Urbana, 40 North 88 West, Champaign County's Arts, Culture and Entertainment Council, will present the 6th annual ACE Awards. A diverse panel of judges sorted through nominations from throughout the community to select winners in the categories of arts education, advocacy, business support, creative community service, and lifetime achievement, as well as a "spotlight" award to an artist drawing national attention to our area. On the Wednesday edition of "Live and Local," I talk with 40 North's Steven Bentz about the event and the winners.

The Danville Symphony Orchestra will play a concert called "Satchmo, Fats & The Duke" Saturday night, and on the Friday edition of "Live and Local," I'll be pleased to welcome the evening's soloist, trumpeter Byron Stripling as our special guest. And we'll preview the current comedy at the Station Theatre in Urbana, "Circle Mirror Transformation."

Rhythm and Roots: Southern Music Traditions" is a traveling exhibition currently at the Vespasian Warner Public Library in Clinton. On the Thursday edition of "Live and Local," Bobbi Perryman will join me to share some of those traditions with us. And I'll talk with singer Jearlyn Steele, a frequent guest on A Prairie Home Companion, in advance of her appearance in Champaign on Saturday.
