Violinist Elaine Fine and pianist John David Moore; University of Illinois steel drum band I-Pan

On the Friday edition of "Live and Local," I'll talk with violinist Elaine Fine and pianist John David Moore, who will give a recital of music by 19th, 20th and 21st century women in Charleston a week from now. And we'll have a visit by members of the University of Illinois steel drum band called I-Pan, who will perform at Urbana's Independent Media Center on Saturday.

Center for World Music at UIUC; Chai-Town, winner of this year’s “A Cappella BEATdown”

The Center for World Music at the University of Illinois is sponsoring a number of upcoming performances, including an introduction to classical Indian music and a concert of music and dance from West Africa. We'll learn about those and more on the Thursday edition of "Live and Local." And we'll hear from Chai-Town, winner of this year's "A Cappella BEATdown" on WILL-TV, in advance of their Friday show in Urbana.

DoCha Chamber Music Festival; David Vayo and Nancy Brokaw of Fertile Ground, a new opera

The inaugural DoCha Chamber Music Festival takes place this week in downtown Champaign. On the Tuesday edition of "Live and Local," we'll hear two festival performers, violinist Stefan Milenkovich and cellist Dmitry Kouzov. I'll also talk with David Vayo of Illinois Wesleyan University, and Nancy Brokaw, composer and librettist, respectively, of Fertile Ground, a new opera premiering in Bloomington this week.

Celtic Crossroads

Celtic Crossroads is a touring show from Ireland that promises an energetic fusion of Eastern European gypsy, North American bluegrass, world classical and jazz, and the various forms of Celtic music from throughout the world. The show arrives in Charleston Thursday night, and they'll stop by our studio for the Thursday edition of "Live and Local" to play us some tunes.

Danville Barbershop Chorus; Soprano Kerry Walters of Bradley University

The Danville Barbershop Chorus will present its annual spring concert Sunday afternoon, with favorite songs like "Hey, Look Me Over," "On the Sunny Side of the Street," and "As Time Goes By." On the Wednesday edition of "Live and Local," the Danville quartet Four on the Floor will join us for a couple of songs and to chat up the show. Also, I talk with soprano Kerry Walters of Bradley University, who, with pianist Denise Parr-Scanlin will give a concert of music in Charleston called "Girls' Night Out: The Music of Clara Schumann and Cecile Chaminade.

Marchfest English-American Dance & Music Weekend; the Vancouver-based Orchid Ensemble

On the Friday edition of "Live and Local," we'll hear about the Marchfest English-American Dance & Music Weekend, sponsored by the Central Illinois English Country Dancers, Illini Folk Dance Society and the Urbana Country Dancers. I'll also talk with Jonathan Bernard of the Vancouver-based Orchid Ensemble, playing traditional Asian music in Normal next Tuesday.
