“Gitit!” a concert in memory of Clif Aldridge, Champaign resident who lost a battle last with cancer

Today's show features two concerts this weekend in Champaign, both of which boast a considerable variety of music and more: a concert called "Gitit!" on Saturday, given in memory of Clif Aldridge, a 23-year-old Champaign resident who lost his battle last week with a rare form of cancer; and a "Peace Program" on Sunday at the Champaign Public Library.

East Central Illinois Youth Orchestra annual winter concert

The East Central Illinois Youth Orchestra will hold its annual winter concert on Martin Luther King Day in Urbana, playing music by Gabrieli, Handel, Glinka, Khachaturian and more. On the Thursday edition of "Live and Local," I'll talk with Aaron Jacobs, the orchestra's manager, about the concert and their upcoming auditions.

Bach’s Lunch, a monthly noon-time concert at the Springer Cultural Center in Champaign

Bach's Lunch-that's Bach as in the composer-is a monthly noon-time concert at the Springer Cultural Center in Champaign, sponsored by the Champaign Park District. This Friday's concert features two young violinists playing Vivaldi, Mozart and, appropriately, Bach. Daniel and Joshua Meling will join us to play live on the Wednesday edition of "Live and Local," along with some adult colleagues.

Buzard Pipe Organ Builders

Downtown Champaign is home to the Buzard Pipe Organ Builders, practitioners of an old-world tradition of fine craftsmanship. They call themselves "artists and engineers, dreamers and pragmatists, conceptualists and perfectionists." Their chief dreamer, John-Paul Buzard, will be my guest on the Tuesday edition of "Live and Local.

Bah Humbug Productions and Parkland Theatre’s production of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol

Bah Humbug Productions and Parkland Theatre just completed their third annual run of their own adaptation of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol. In a special two-hour edition of "Live and Local" on Wednesday, we will broadcast that complete production, specially adapted for radio, with my interviews of those involved. The Flexible Flyers; the handbell choir Bells in Motion

On Friday's "Live and Local," we'll have a live performance by a trio based in Urbana called the Flexible Flyers. They describe themselves as well-grounded in old-time fiddle and banjo dance music but also influenced by post-bebop jazz, Arabic classical, Irish fiddling and more. And we'll hear about the handbell choir Bells in Motion, who perform in Eureka on Sunday.
