New Med School To Focus On Problem-Solving, Improving Health Care

At the Carle Illinois College of Medicine, students will be immersed in clinical settings from the very start and will begin interacting with patients in their first year instead of waiting until later in their training. The idea is to prevent some of the problems that can arise when engineers and medical professionals do not work hand in hand.

Unions Petition To Reverse Pension Cap

When school districts outside of Chicago negotiate contracts, they do so with the assurance that the state will pick up the tab on pensions. To control growing pension costs, lawmakers capped salary bumps at 6 percent in 2005. This year, the cap tightened to 3 percent. Illinois' teachers unions have collected more than 15,000 signatures on petitions urging state lawmakers to reverse that measure.

As Shootings Rise, Champaign-Urbana Leaders Grapple With Gun Violence

The group gathered at the Douglass branch of the Champaign Public Library for a special meeting of the Champaign Community Coalition. It was an opportunity, said facilitator Tracy Parsons, to brainstorm why shootings are on the rise, and what the community can do to curb the violence.

Eastern Illinois University will launch an overhaul of its programs and colleges starting next month, with the start of the new fiscal year. It will bring with it a number of changes to the university in Charleston intended to make it more appealing to a wider range of students.

U Of I President Touts New Chicago Research Institute

University of Illinois System President Timothy Killeen said he is excited the U of I system will lead the Discovery Partners Institute. The DPI is a new research institute where students will work alongside researchers and businesses. Killeen said this will spur economic growth in the state.
