NPR journalists David Gilkey and Zabihullah Tamanna died a year ago this week, ambushed on a remote road in southern Afghanistan while on a reporting assignment traveling with the Afghan National Army. Scott Air Force Base Celebrates 100 Years

Scott Air Force Base near Belleville is celebrating its 100th anniversary. It was founded in 1917 as Scott Field, named after Cpl. Frank Scott, the first enlisted member of the U.S. armed forces to lose his life in an aviation accident.

Ameren Experiments With Microgrid In Champaign

Since December, Ameren Corporation has been operating a small, independent power grid on the south side of Champaign that uses solar panels, a wind turbine and two natural gas-powered generators to power more than 190 homes in the area.

Soldier From Bloomington Killed In Attack In Afghanistan

The military says a 22-year-old soldier from central Illinois has been killed in Afghanistan. The Department of Defense released a statement Friday saying Sgt. Josh Rodgers of Bloomington was among two soldiers killed this week as a result of small arms fire in Nangarhar Province. Rodgers' family pastor, Paul Thomasson, tells the Pantagraph newspaper the family was notified of his death Wednesday.
