Vermilion County Board Exploring Change In Leadership Model

Vermilion County Board Chair Mike Marron is appointing a bipartisan ad-hoc committee to investigate whether the county would function under a part-time chairman and professional administrator, the same leadership structure used in Peoria and McLean Counties. He says the county has expanded to where it may need someone with more experience in public administration.

Incumbents Win In Champaign County

Republican County Auditor John Farney retains his office by a slim 129-vote margin over Democrat George Danos.  Democrat Julia Rietz was re-elected comfortably in the race for Champaign County State's Attorney.

Urbana Medical Marijuana Facility Opens

The second medical marijuana dispensary to open in Champaign County is now seeing its first customers. Nu Med is located at 105 East University in Urbana, the site of a former Blockbuster Video location. It joins Champaign-based Phoenix Botanical as the two dispensaries allowed by the state's pilot program in State Police District 10, which includes Champaign, Vermilion, and seven other Central Illinois counties.

Champaign County Administrator Makes Case For Facilities Referendum

The Champaign County Board is expected to vote Thursday night on whether to place a referendum for facilities on the ballot for this November.  The initiative would raise the county’s sales tax one quarter of a percent for a period of 12 years.  Illinois Public Media's Brian Moline spoke with Champaign County Administrator Rick Snider about the proposal, including plans for the county jail.
