Community School for the Arts and the Central Illinois English Country Dancers

The Community School for the Arts in Urbana will offer a number of summer programs, including a rock camp, an art camp, a banjo class and a classical string orchestra for kids. The School's director, Robin Kearton, will be my guest on the Wednesday edition of "Live and Local." We'll also hear about the Central Illinois English Country Dancers' 14th Annual Playford Ball.

Family Band Weekend in Arcola and the Blues, BBQ and Arts Fest

On the Tuesday edition of "Live and Local," we'll have two guests affiliated with area music festivals. Brian Karrick of Rockome Gardens will be here to tell us about the upcoming Family Band Weekend in Arcola. And Chuck Gomez of the Watseka Theatre will preview the Blues, BBQ and Arts Fest, a short drive north of our area.

Chicago Chamber Musicians concert

We bring you interviews and occasional live performances to introduce you to musicians heard throughout our listening area.

Monday is a holiday, and we'll take the day off from the regular show to present a recital by the Chicago Chamber Musicians, including Dvorak's Quintet for Piano and Strings.

Fierce fiddle, driving bodhrán, and funky guitar riffs come together to lift listeners' feet, drinks, and spirits." That's how the Irish music trio called athas describes itself. The group will be playing at the Channing-Murray Foundation in Urbana on Saturday, part of the Piper's Hut Concert Series. And they will be playing live in our studio on Friday.

The American Orff-Schwulwerk Assocation

The American Orff-Schwulwerk Assocation promotes a creative teaching approach that unites music and movement. On the Thursday edition of "Live and Local," we'll talk with Kimberly McCord of Illinois State University and Debby Smith of the Heart of Illinois Orff Chapter about the 2nd Annual Elementary Student Honors Day Festival, happening this weekend in Normal.

Schwartz Family Band and The Baroque Artists of Champaign-Urbana

The Schwartz Family Band consists of Papa Scott on guitar, sisters Samantha and Kitty on flute and cello, and brother Aaron on violin. The band will appear on the noon-time music series at the Mills Breast Cancer Institute in Urbana on Thursday, and they'll play live at noon on the Wednesday edition of "Live and Local." Also, Chester Alwes, music director of the Baroque Artists of Champaign-Urbana, stops by to talk about the group's concert in Champaign this weekend.

Illinois Summer Youth Music

Illinois Summer Youth Music is one of the most highly regarded and well-known musical programs of its kind, serving students from as young as sixth grade to graduating high school seniors. On Tuesday's edition of "Live and Local," we'll talk with David Allen and Joyce Griggs of the University of Illinois about the ISYM program, which this year celebrates its 60th anniversary.

Prairie Chicken Asylum and Jake McVey

On the Friday edition of "Live and Local," we'll have the band Prairie Chicken Asylum live in our studio, previewing their barn dance in Urbana Friday night. The dance will raise funds for the The First Annual Champaign-Urbana Folk and Roots Festival, coming in September. Also, a special appearance by Nashville recording artist Jake McVey, bringing his "Pay It Forward" tour through our area.

Jim Pugh and Eijiro Nakagawa

Jim Pugh is a well-traveled trombonist now on the jazz faculty at the University of Illinois. Jim will be my guest on the Thursday edition of "Live and Local," along with a young trombonist from Japan, Eijiro Nakagawa, who has made a name for himself in the classical and jazz worlds.
