Today, we speak with Ben Grosser, who’s been tracking this obsession with growth for years. Plus, when does school become less about learning and more about grades? One Illinois professor is working on ways we can grade students without using points. And, Illinois is in the top five states when it comes to producing college hockey players. We’ll learn why we still don’t have a Division I team in our own state.

Tips For Dealing With Seasonal Affective Disorder; Inequity In Public School Districts; Buying Groceries In Rural Areas

It’s mid-November, but winter is already here: complete with snow and below freezing temperatures. If you’re someone who feels down this time of year, we’ll provide some tips on dealing with seasonal affective disorder. Plus, Illinois has gotten better at providing more money to school districts that need it the most. But there are still huge gaps that have to do with how our district borders are drawn. And, rural Illinoisans often have to travel farther to get their food. We’ll talk with folks from around the state who are trying to bring more fresh and local food options into their communities.

Merger Urger: State Senator Pushes Consolidation

llinois has more than 850 school districts, and most of those stop at 8th grade, or serve only high school students. State Sen. Dan McConchie (R-Lake Zurich), has proposed legislation that would give such districts three years to merge to become “unit” districts — the kind that serve all grades.
