Durbin Slams GOP For 'Politicizing' Zika Virus Funding

Illinois Democratic U.S. Senator Dick Durbin says Republican members of the House 'blew it' by adding provisions to a measure to research the Zika Virus that Democratic members couldn't support. That's after a bipartisan Senate agreement to approve $1.1 billion in emergency Zika funding. Congress adjourned until after Labor Day without approving the plan.

Abner Mikva, Liberal Voice From Illinois, Dies At 90

Abner Mikva, a former Illinois congressman, state legislator, federal appellate judge and presidential adviser, has died. The head of Mikva Challenge, a leadership organization Mikva founded, says Mikva died Monday in hospice care at Rush University Medical Center.

Durbin, Bustos Push For Trade With Cuba After Delegation Visit

Democratic Illinois U.S. Senator Dick Durbin and 17th District Congressional Democrat Cheri Bustos were among those who traveled to Cuba with President Obama this week.  Durbin says he witnessed a 'spirit of cooperation' that he hadn't seen before in the island countrry. The two are pushing for the end to the U.S. trade embargo with Cuba.

Obama To Address Illinois General Assembly Next Month

On the ninth anniversary of his entrance into the presidential race, President Barack Obama will address the Illinois General Assembly in Springfield on February 10th.  Gov. Bruce Rauner released a statement, saying "he looks forward to hearing him speak about finding common ground between Republicans and Democrats."

Durbin: Too Early To Predict GOP Presidential Nominee

Illinois U.S. Senator Dick Durbin says the country needs to wait until early March, after few caucuses and primaries, to get a true sense of who the Republican nominee will be for president.  He says early February's Iowa Caucuses and New Hampshire primary aren't enough to gain a complete picture.
