Arts-Centered Residential Development Planned For Downtown Urbana

A new four-story development in downtown Urbana would combine the arts with living space. Plans for the $20 million “Urbana Arts” development were announced by the city of Urbana late Wednesday. The project is to be built on a city-owned parking lot (previously single-family homes) on East Illinois Street, just south of Lincoln Square Mall.

Urbana Park Project Honored With Governor’s Hometown Award

Urbana was one of 23 communities honored in Springfield Thursday with a Governor’s Hometown Award. The awards are given by the governor’s Serve Illinois Commission, for projects sponsored by local governments that had strong volunteer support, met a need and made an impact on the community.

New Township Assessor In Urbana Backs Off From Controversial Hire

Wayne Williams, the new township assessor in Urbana, says that Joe Meents, the controversial deputy he hired this week will leave by the end of the month. Williams says a new committee will now oversee his office’s hiring process --- and that two longtime employees he fired this week will be welcome to re-apply.
