The University of Illinois is set to propose a tuition freeze for students entering in the fall. It would be the second year in a row that the system held tuition flat for in-state students.

The Western Illinois University Board of Trustees has approved a recommendation to reduce the cost of tuition by 3 percent for new incoming undergraduates who enroll for the 2016-17 academic year.

Representative Jack Franks(D) from Marengo proposes to do away with the half-priced tuition for those whose parents work at the school. Franks says it would save 10 million dollars and is necessary for Illinois' financial situation.

Trustees have approved the first zero-percent tuition increase for in-state freshman in 20 years.  Timothy Killeen was formally named the next president of the U of I.

Ed McMillan, a U of I graduate and Trustee since 2009, replaces Chris Kennedy in the leadership post.
