The Austrian pianist Artur Schnabel was one of the most influential pianists of the 20th century. He brought a new seriousness to the piano recital. Beethoven was one of his specialties, and he was the first to record the complete piano sonatas of that composer. On Classics of the Phonograph, Saturday at 11 am on WILL-FM, we will hear his recording of Beethoven’s Waldstein Sonata as well as his recording of the opening movement of Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto.
