Live and Local
On the Tuesday edition of "Live and Local," guest host Roger Cooper talks to singer-songwriter Michael Kammin, playing at Krannert Uncorked in Urbana on Thursday. During the second half, he talks to organist Stephen Buzard. He is a recent graduate of Westminster Choir College and is headed to Wells Cathedral as their organ scholar.
On the Monday edition of "Live and Local," we'll hear highlights from four shows heard earlier this year, with live performances by violinist Stefan Milenkovich and cellist Dmitry Kouzov; a talented two-girl band from Urbana called Endless Pages; a solo turn by singer and bodhran player Dean Karres; and a duo on traditional Chinese instruments.
On the Friday edition of "Live and Local," we'll hear highlights from three shows heard earlier this year, with live performances by the U.S. Army Ground Forces Band Wind Quintet, a barbershop quartet from Danville called Four on the Floor and the Pacifica Quartet.
Desafinado is a six-piece ensemble based in Champaign-Urbana that plays samba, bossa nova, and MPB, or Musica Popular Brasileira. The group will appear later this month at the first CU Pride Fest, and we've got them for a full hour of music on the Wednesday edition of "Live and Local.
Button accordion player Paddy O'Brien, fiddler Patrick Ourceau and guitarist Pat Egan are the internationally acclaimed traditional Irish trio Chulrua. The band will play at Urbana's Independent Media Center Tuesday night, and they'll join me in the studio for an hour of lively music making on the Tuesday edition of "Live and Local.
The Champaign-Urbana Theatre Company is currently presenting the musical Footloose, with its Oscar- and Tony-nominated score, at Parkland College. On the Monday edition of "Live and Local," a few of the actors will share a song or two. And we'll hear a preview of the coming season at the Kirkland Fine Arts Center in Decatur.
According to the Minneapolis-based Galactic Cowboy Orchestra, their music is Chick Corea meets The Dixie Dregs meets A Prairie Home Companion-an eclectic mix of bluegrass-edged tunes with jazz and world/fusion elements. The Galactic Cowboy Orchestra will play at Sleepy Creek Vineyards in Fairmount Friday night, and they'll be my guests on the Friday edition of "Live and Local.
The musicians of Maria and Co. are all veterans of the local music scene, playing in multiple groups representing many musical genres. Accordionist Maria Merkelo, violinist Dorothy Martirano, guitarist and balalaika player Rob Prescott and bassist Josh Houchin will appear at the Krannert Center in Urbana Thursday evening, and they'll join me live in the studio on the Thursday edition of "Live and Local.
Prairie Fire Theatre presents a musical tribute to the 1940s called "I'll Be Seeing You," in Normal the next two weekends. Producer, director and actor Robert Mangialardi will chat with me about the project on the Wednesday edition of "Live and Local." And we'll revisit a one-woman show called "And I Remember," to be presented this weekend in Urbana.
Sugar Creek Symphony and Song happens this weekend in Watseka. On the Tuesday edition of "Live and Local," I'll talk with singers from this year's festival, which features two masterpieces of comedic opera: Rossini's "The Barber of Seville" and Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro." We'll also meet pianist Ian Gindes, who gives a recital in Urbana this Saturday.
